Mass ECAN July News

The Supreme Court's decision to limit the EPA's authority over power plant emissions is deeply disappointing to many of us working on climate change mitigation and adaptation. I hope that you might find inspiration from stories of local governments accelerating their efforts to reduce emissions—and from this community. The work we're doing in our neighborhoods, cities, and state is more important than ever.

Field Tour: Pelham Lake Park
July 22nd, 10:00am-1:00pm
We're excited to announce our next field tour at Pelham Lake Park in Rowe, MA. We can't wait to see you there in person! We'll learn about the Mass Audubon Forest Climate Resilience Program’s work with municipalities to implement Climate-Smart management strategies. We will tour sites of the future old growth enhancement area and discuss plans to increase forest stocking via planting.
RSVP here to join us (limit of 20 participants). Click the RSVP link for details on where to park and what to bring (including a picnic lunch). We will send a reminder with these details to all who sign up.
This event is co-hosted by Mass ECAN, Mass Audubon, and Long View Forester Alex Barrett.

Every month, we highlight someone in our community of practice so you can learn about a variety of adaptation work and "meet" a new colleague!
Josh Rapp, PhD and MA licensed forester
Conservation Scientist, Mass Audubon
Bio: The focus of Josh’s work is on developing and promoting resilient forests through forest stewardship planning and ensuring that forest management practices are appropriate for changing climate conditions to safe-guard water, wildlife habitat, and forest carbon stocks. Before joining Mass Audubon, Josh worked in governmental agencies and academic institutions, and has conducted research on forests and climate change in systems as diverse as the tropical Andes of South America, the Northern Rockies, and New England.
Climate adaptation project: Working with many partners, Josh coordinates the Forest Climate Resilience Program (FCRP), whose goal is to help landowners plan for and implement forest resilience management practices in their woodlands. Developed and piloted in the Mohawk Trail Woodland Partnership region with funding from the MVP program, the FCRP has enabled several municipalities to develop forest stewardship climate plans for town forests. The next step in the pilot phase is to implement the resilience practices described in the plans and turn these town forests into demonstration forests where the public and private landowners can learn about adaptation in action. To learn more, contact Josh or visit massaudubon.org/climateforestry.

Expert Work Group Spotlight
|
|
|
Our work groups are specifically for experts on various climate adaptation topics that require cross-organizational collaboration for success. We share work group products here in the newsletter for the rest of our community to run with. See a summary of all our work groups here.
Mass ECAN Climate Communications Expert Work Group
The Climate Communications Expert Work Group builds community, creates and compiles climate communications best practices and resources, and fosters collaboration among climate change communication practitioners. Group members determine priorities based on collective goals and member needs, in addition to supporting other Mass ECAN work groups to make effective climate communications accessible to the entire professional network.
Over the last year, the group has focused on growing membership and connecting to climate communications professionals throughout Massachusetts, hosting a virtual networking event, and developing resources such as the Advancing Climate Adaptation through Watershed-Scale Collaboration fact sheet (a collaboration with Mass ECAN’s Slow the Flow Work Group). In the next year, we look forward to continuing to grow our membership and providing climate communications resources for the broader climate resilience and adaptation community.
If you are interested in joining the Climate Communications Expert Work Group, please contact group co-leads Rishya Narayanan and Krista Haas.
