Reflections on the day

Thank you to everyone who attended and supported our 4th Mass ECAN Conference on Watershed Scale Climate Collaboration on May 3rd. It was so exciting to be together at this event again – there’s nothing quite like an in-person full day conference!

Mass ECAN conferences aim to create space to learn from each other and connect as a community of practice. Colleagues from a variety of organizations attended, including non-profits, state agencies, municipalities, regional planning authorities, consulting firms, and universities.

Bianca Bowman
Climate Justice Coordinator
GreenRoots

BioBianca is passionate about building community knowledge, power, and leadership to combat the unequal distribution of the effects of climate change. At GreenRoots, she leads and supports projects that center resident leadership in advancing community climate resilience and adaptation. She also has a background in community-based citizen science research, environmental field work and forest fire management, and is originally from the Washington, DC area. Bianca loves taking trips to the mountains, eating heartily, reading fantasy and Greek mythology-based fiction, and attending music and arts events throughout Boston.

Climate Adaptation Project
Bianca leads GreenRoots' work to help the Chelsea and East Boston communities adapt to increasing extreme urban heat in the summers through the Cool Block and the C-HEAT research project. For the "Cool Block" project, Bianca helped transform an empty lot into a community-focused and built cooling open space in a high-heat concentrated neighborhood. This summer, residents will be paid stipends to water newly planted street trees, community ideas will be directly incorporated into long term park designs, and local youth are leading the project to build temporary shade structures. Data collection for the outcomes of this project is supported by years of collaborative heat research with the C-HEAT project. Contact Bianca or hear more about the project here.
