Reflections on the day

Member Spotlight
Every month, we highlight someone in our community of practice so you can learn about a variety of adaptation work and "meet" a new colleague!

Katie Kahl
Director of Strategic Initiatives
UMass Amherst Gloucester Marine Station

BioAs UMass Extension faculty, Katie develops integrated research and engagement programs, including co-leadership of the Mass ECAN multi-state Salt Marsh Work Group and leadership of the North Shore Blue Economy initiative. She is a member of the City of Gloucester’s Harbor Planning Committee, and the Executive Committee for the Northeast Center for Coastal Resilience, a unique collaboration across UMass campuses and partners. Her applied experience in conservation policy, green infrastructure implementation, and land conservation ground her role. Prior to joining UMass, she worked for The Nature Conservancy in the Great Lakes region.

Climate Adaptation Project
Working with a team of faculty, research partners, and coastal community leaders, Kahl is leading an effort to re-think ways in which critical deferred maintenance on the 6-acre UMass Amherst Gloucester Marine Station property can serve as a demonstration of best practices in coastal resilience design, engineering, and construction. The Marine Station offers a regional hub for immersive student learning, long-term research and community engagement and discussion. Contact Katie for more information!
